Digital Storytelling Workshop
On August 29 – 31, within the framework of the Little Islands Festival 2023 the EFFEA artists created a site-specific “Homonarrans” workshop for the students of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki ( Department of Visual and Applied Arts).
The primary goal of the workshop was to encourage a creative exchange between the students and emerging artists. The EFFEA artists imparted their methods, enabling the students to expand their research capabilities and develop fresh insights via narrative techniques and hybrid media environments. In turn, the students contributed novel insights and skills in new media to the artists, thereby enriching the Homonarrans project through a contemporary approach.
The workshop focused on the enigmatic narrative of the archaeological site of Episkopi, particularly spotlighting the sacrosanct tomb of a woman named Neiko, who lived during the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD. Discovered in 2017 by the Cyclades Antiquities Ephorate, Neiko’s tomb was notable for the luxurious jewelry found with her and the peculiar condition of her skeleton – with bound hands and feet and evident injuries, suggesting deliberate harm. A distinctive feature was a mineral pitch mass on her chest, hinting at a potential necrophobic exorcism ritual.
During the workshop, participants were encouraged by the EFFEA artists to explore the myth, stimulate their imagination, and use technology to tell hybrid stories inspired by the archaeological site of Episkopi and the myth surrounding Neiko.
Participants, guided by questions such as “What is history?” and “Which stories do we choose to tell and why?”
Here, you are invited to discover the outcomes of their creativity.
